New wallets
New wallets, originally uploaded by Black Heart Industries.
I’ve been crafting like crazy the last couple of days. This is the result, 23 new wallets. They’re made of leather, antique french grain sacks and an upcycled reflective road safety sign. I’ll be cruising around this weekend with my renegade shop. Possibly a craft fair.
Articulated clipboard, iPad cradle & G5
Articulated arms & a mess, originally uploaded by Black Heart Industries.
What a mess, and yes that’s my desk. The clipboard to the left is one of a kind that I found at a flee market. Apparently made by a chemist. The iPad cradle to the right is made from a wall bracket for a flat screen and a piece of an iPad stand made by my friend Brian: http://www.industryworks.com/Industryworks/Home.html
The G5 and monitor where a gift from Greg, thankx. However the hard drive had been removed long ago. I bought a new drive and it didn’t work. Had it tested, it’s fine. Talked to the folks at the Apple store and an Apple expert. Useless. Took a week to find the info. The drive must be 1.5 Gb/s or less or it won’t be seen by the computer. Returned drive and got another. Required a jumper on the back. Installed OS 10.4 while I looked for a copy of OS 10.5. The OS 10.5 disks that came with computers will only work on that model. It took a month to find an update disk. Thankx Tom. I had to use an external enclosure to load the new OS. When booting up the G5 doesn’t see the internal drive but will see the external FireWire drive. If I boot up while holding down option, the drive shows up right away. I think that the drive starts up fast, sees the jumper, then slows down. That small amount of time makes the computer miss the drive. I must have formatted that drive 7 times. There were more problems but I don’t want to bore you any more. What’s important is that I can now sync my iPad.
Yule log
Yule log, originally uploaded by Black Heart Industries.
I found a mechanical Yule log and fake fire place on the side walk. They had been separated from each other. I brought the thing inside and plugged it in. Took a moment to find the power switch. It worked, but not well. There where some other switches too. This thing is also a space heater! So, on Christmas day I took it apart, fixed the fan motor and cleaned it. A small modification to the rear and done. I now have a wall mounted space heater with soothing yule log action.

Mate gourd
gourd, originally uploaded by Black Heart Industries.
I got this last October, down the coast, at a pumpkin patch. I just let it air dry. It got some water on it that softened the outer skin and removed some of the color. I used a Japanese saw to cut the top off. The new edges where placed onto sandpaper to make even. The seeds and fibers were then scooped out and the inside washed. If I had some rock salt, I would put it inside. I’m not sure if I should keep the top and add a hinge. Also, should I add a metal border? What method to employ: Fabrication, electro-plating, machining? I will be adding a base similar to a wine glass. I’ll probably machine it out of steel.

Analog picture frames
Analog picture frames, originally uploaded by Black Heart Industries.
What we have here are two Graflex cut film magazines. Each holds twelve pieces of 4 x 5 film. I had forgotten that I had these. I was looking though my old cameras when I found them. They’re made of wood, brass, steel, and leather. This is an analog version of a digital picture frame. Each holds twelve pictures that can be shuffled by pulling a brass rod upward to pull a steel film holder with it. The plate can then be reinserted at the back of the stack. There is a button hidden under the leather that removes the back cover, if one wishes to view all pictures at once. There are exactly twenty four photographs in this set. What a lucky break. They were taken on a modified 1950s Polaroid Land Camera. The film was no longer available, so I removed the back cover and milled the back flat. Some wood was fabricated to hold a 4 x 5 Polaroid back to the back of the camera. This contraption worked quite well after a light leak was fixed. This set of photos is of Burning Man 1996 at The Piano Cathedral, aka The Piano Bar. Some of them have faded, not unlike my memories.
Assemblage
Assemblage, originally uploaded by Black Heart Industries.
I just picked up the front page from The Illustrated London News of Saturday, March 5th, 1881. The 92nd (Gordon) highlanders skirmishing are on news of the day. It prompted me to pull out some old photographs. I placed it in a frame that Angela left behind. The color photo is of her. I believe it’s a self portrait, or maybe Katie took it. The same is true for the contact sheet above her. The nude, in the enlarger frame, is by Nick. Her name’s Stacy, who I met only once. The gal with the chair was also taken by Nick, this time in Italy. She’s American, apparently worked in a supermarket in L.A. as a bagger. Behind her is a picture of Lee-Anne. The skull is fairly new. The bowler is by Knox of New York; my favorite hat. My size is 7 1/4, if you run across a top hat. To the right is a sculpture I made of only found objects. The file cabinet is of the same kind that I made my desk from. I haven’t yet decided what to put in the label holders. The large candle holder is a prop from the movie Silent Hill. Awful movie, but one of my favorite games of all time.
Record and tape cabinet
Record and tape cabinet, originally uploaded by Black Heart Industries.
The two fruit crates of records and three wooden tape holders were driving me crazy, so I made this cabinet. It’s 34″ x 22.5″ x 13.25″ and made of the lids of wine barrels and oak wine flavoring sticks. The pulls are salvaged from something long ago. I haven’t listened to any records or tapes since I moved three years ago. I’ve been wanting to listen to the Butthole Surfers for I while now, along with Melanie, Kate Bush, Virgin Prunes, The Birthday Party, and the Siouxsie vinyl bootlegs, etc. As for the tapes, I have my radio show at KZSU Stanford, The Process, which I did live noise every week, recordings of The Hour of Slack, No Other Radio Network, The Hell Fire Club, noise only released on cassette, and live shows I’ve recorded. All the regular tapes are in the workshop. One tape I will be digitizing is an early tape of Rubella Ballet, Ballet Bag 1982. It was a cassette only release with booklet, stickers and badge. I still have the badge. Thought the tape was lost; glad I found it.
